数学は明晰であり、数学の学習は論理的思考能力を身に着けるのに大変役立ちます。残念なことに、算数は好きだった子供でも、中学上級以上になると数学が嫌いになる子供がずっと増えていくようです。
ところで、日本では論理学の授業は現在どれだけ行われているでしょうか？ 大学では論理学の授業はあってもあくまでも選択科目の一つではないでしょうか？ 小中高では論理学の授業が行われているでしょうか？ そういう話は余り耳にしません。論理学の授業のかわりに、プログラミングの授業が行われているのではないかと想像しますが、そうでしょうか？ プログラミングの授業でももちろん論理的思考能力は養われますが、それは限定的な論理的思考能力しか身につかないような気がします。
本日のラッセルの言葉のなかにでてくる「（あらゆる分野における）精確な知識の獲得に必要な論理的思考能力」は、プログラミングの学習によって養われる論理的思考能力よりも、もっと適用範囲が広いものです。いわく言い難いものがありますが、ラッセルが何を言おうとしているか、ラッセルの著作に親しんでいる人なら、理解・共感できるだろうと思われます。
Mathematics is clear and precise, and studying it is extremely helpful in developing logical thinking skills. Unfortunately, even children who once liked arithmetic tend to dislike mathematics more and more as they reach the upper levels of middle school and beyond.
By the way, how often are logic classes offered in Japan today? At universities, there may be courses in logic, but aren’t they merely among the optional subjects? Are logic classes conducted in elementary, middle, or high schools? I hardly ever hear about such cases. I imagine that programming classes are being offered instead of logic classes?is that the case? Of course, programming classes also foster logical thinking skills, but I feel that the kind of logical thinking they cultivate is rather limited.
The "logical thinking ability necessary for acquiring precise knowledge (in all fields)" that appears in today’s words of Russell is broader in scope than the logical thinking skills developed through programming. It is difficult to put into words, but those familiar with Russell’s writings will likely understand and sympathize with what he is trying to convey.
