私が言いたいのは、罰が正当化できる場合、それは残念ながら必要なことであり、単なる報復として喜ばれるべきものではない、ということである。・・・。
従来の道徳家達は「罪人」をこのように見ない。逆に、罪の（存在についての）信念は、多くの人が持つ憎悪の感情を正当化するものとされている。これは、特定の国や人種や信条全体が悪とされる場合に特に悲惨である。私達が住む世界はこのような集団的憎悪で満ちており、それこそが人類に災厄をもたらす最大の脅威である。

聞き飽きた主張かもしれないですが、はっきり理解し、自覚すべき事柄です。
ヘイトスピーチに対しては「ヘイトスピーチ規制法」が制定されています。しかし、実際はヘイトスピーチなのに、一つの「意見」であり、規制すべきではないと主張し続ける人がまだそこそこいます。自分に対してそのような言葉を投げかけられると憤慨するが、他人に対して同様の言葉を自分が投げかけても問題ないと思う人は残念ながらいなくなりません。
