＜寸言＞
　「心神喪失」状態にあった時に行われた「犯罪」は罰せられず、治療の対象とされます。そういった場合には、その人には「自由意志」はなかったとされます。
　ラッセルは、理論哲学者としては、普遍的な因果関係の原則（あらゆる事象には必ず原因があるという考え方）に疑問を抱いています。しかし、一人の常識を持った市民としては、「因果関係の原則」が存在していると「仮定して」、日々社会生活を送りました。
　因果関係や自由意志の問題はなかなか難しい問題を含んでいますので、ここではふれないでおきます。
