この考え方（注：人間には下等動物に対する義務がなく生殺与奪の権を持つ)を,人間に関することであれば、宗教、特にキリスト教は全面的に否認する。キリスト教の理論では、人間は自分が所有する奴隷の一人を殺す権利も、女奴隷を強要して妾にする権利も、奴隷達の結婚を解消する権利も持っていない。宗教上の問題においては、人は全て平等である。しかし、これは公式の教義ではあるが、ほとんどのキリスト教国では、ほとんどの時代において、その（実際の）慣行からはほど遠いものであった。奴隷制が一般的であったところではどこでも、奴隷の上記の理論的権利は、個人によっても法廷によっても認められてこなかった。
In Christian theory, a man has no right to murder one of his slaves, or to force a female slave into concubinage, or to dissolve the marriages of slaves; in religious matters, all men are equal. But although this is the official doctrine, it has been very far from being the practice in most Christian countries at most times. Wherever slavery has prevailed, the above theoretical rights of slave's have not been acknowledged either by individuals or by the law courts. ... This attitude has been very greatly softened during the last hundred years, but more of it still lingers than is generally admitted.
