当初は、全ての人々が読み書きできるようにするために一般化（義務化）された教育が、全く異なる目的に奉仕することが可能だということが発見された。ナンセンスな事柄を（国民に）注入することによって、教育は国民を統合し、集団的な熱狂を生みだす。もし全ての政府が同様のナンセンスを教えるのであれば その害はそれほど大きくはないであろう。不幸なことに、各々の国がそれ自身の商標をもっており、この商標の多様性が異なる信条の熱狂的な信者達の間に敵意が生まれるのを助ける（のである）。
Education, which was at first made universal in order that all might be able to read and write, has been found capable of serving quite other purposes. By instilling nonsense it unifies populations and generates collective enthusiasm. If all governments taught the same nonsense, the harm would not be so great. Unfortunately each has its own brand, and the diversity serves to produce hostility between the devotees of different creeds.

＜寸言＞
政府や支配層が、国家や体制に対する尊敬心や（悪法に対しても）遵法精神を義務教育によって生徒達の心に醸成したいと思う心理や論理がよくわかります。
最近では、政府や文部科学省も表向きは、批判的精神や論理的思考能力の重要性を強調していますが、もちろん、将来自分達を批判する選挙民（国民）を養成することになりますので、"そこそこ"ですませることになる運命にあるようです。
