事実、幸福に対する軽蔑は、通常，他人の幸福に対する軽蔑であり、人類に対する憎悪のための優雅な偽装である。自分がより高貴であると考えるもののために自分自身の幸福を犠牲にする時、その人はもっと低い程度の高貴さを楽しんでいる人達を妬み（ねたみ）がちであり、この妬みは，自らを聖者（聖なる心を持つ者）と思う人達を、非常にしばしば、残忍かつ破壊的にするであろう。
In fact, contempt for happiness is usually contempt for other people's happiness, and is an elegant disguise for hatred of the human race. Even when a man genuinely sacrifices his own happiness in favor of something that he thinks nobler, he is apt to remain envious of those who enjoy a lesser degree of nobility, and this envy will, all too often, make those who think themselves saints cruel and destructive.

現代日本では、「自分がより高貴であると考えるもののために自分自身の幸福を犠牲にすること」（例：特攻で天皇陛下万歳！）を賛美する人はあまりいません。しかし、たとえば、自民党の右翼的な保守層にはそのように考えている人がけっこういて、自民党のなかで大きな影響力を持っています。「男も女も全員、自衛隊の経験をすべきです」と主張する者さえいます。困ったものです。
