人は、自分の本能に反する事実を提示されれば、それをよく吟味し、圧倒的な証拠がない限り、それを信じようとしない。一方、本能のままに行動する理由を与えるものが提示されれば、たとえわずかな証拠でも受け入れるだろう。神話の起源は、このようにして説明される。
If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance with his instincts, he will accept it even on the slenderest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way.

人間には、疑い深さと軽信性という、正反対の性質が同居しています。嫌いなことや気にそまないことを受け入れることは困難です。また、好きなことや好ましく思うことはやりすぎてしまう危険も潜んでいます。
世の中には、神話を好む人と、そういったものが嫌いな人がいます。前者は情緒にひたることが好きな傾向があり、後者は論理的思考が好きな傾向があると言ってよさそうです。いや、前者には、（A)本当に神話や神秘的なことが好きな人々と、（B)そういったものを「利用する」ことが好きな人々（政治家、詐欺師、宗教家等々）の二種類があると言ったほうがよさそうです。自民党の安倍派の人々は、前者（A)でしょうか、それとも前者（B)でしょうか？ あるいは、前者（A)＋（B)（最悪の人達）でしょうか？
