人間であれば人間中心主義になるのは普通であり、自然です。ラッセルも、哲学以外の分野においては、多くの場合、人間中心主義に立っていました。しかし、ラッセルは、真理の探究をめざす哲学においては人間中心主義は不適切だと考えていました。それを極端に表現したのが、引用した発言です、。(同じ趣旨の、もっと有名なのものは、1914年にボストンで行ったローウェル記念講義での、次の発言です。
A process which led from the amoeba to man appeared to the philosophers to be obviously a progress, though whether the amoeba would agree with this opinion is not known. 原生動物ではなく、アメーバと言っています。)
独仏や日本の伝統哲学は、人間中心主義のものが少なくないですが、ラッセルにとっては、そういったものは、倫理学や政治学などの社会科学（個人の場合は心理学や宗教学）などで扱ったほうがよいと考えていました。
