[New York Times, 1940年４月26日付に掲載されたラッセルの公開書簡 [ラッセル事件（学問の自由に対する攻撃）について]
もし私が自分の利益や生来の好み（inclinations）だけを考えていたなら、ただちに(「バートランド・ラッセル事件＝学問の自由への攻撃」から)退却していたでしょう。しかし、そのような行動は、個人的な観点からは賢明であったとしても、私の判断では、臆病で利己的なものでもあったでしょう。自分達の利益と、寛容と言論の自由という原則が危機に瀕していることを理解していた多くの人々は、最初からこの論争を続けることを切望していました。もし私が退却していたら、私は彼らの闘いの理由（casus belli）を奪い、相当数のグループが、自分達の意見、人種、国籍に嫌悪感を抱く個人を公職から追放することが許されるという意見/命題（proposition）に暗に同意した（ことになる）でしょう。これは私には不道徳に見えます。

But however wise such action might have been from a personal point of view, it would also, in my judgment, have been cowardly and selfish. A great many people who realized that their own interests and the principles of toleration and free speech were at stake were anxious from the first to continue the controversy. If I had retired I should have robbed them of their casus belli and tacitly assented to the proposition that substantial groups shall be allowed to drive out of public office individuals whose opinions, race, or nationality they find repugnant. This to me would appear immoral.

いわゆるバートランド・ラッセル事件（学問の自由への攻撃）についてふれている公開書簡（New York Times 紙の1940年４月26日付）の一節です。
権力者や旧い考えを抱く保守的な考えの人達（旧安倍派や日本会議の人達）は、自分の気に入らない人達を公職から追放したい衝動にかられるようです。東西冷戦の時代には、アメリカでレッドパージが起こり、日本もアメリカにならって日本版のレッドパージが行われました。現代では過去のようなあからさまものにはならないかも知れないですが、仮想敵国をお互いに想定することが日常化すれば、対立が深まり、多様性が失われ、いろんな人達が公職から追放されることがまた起きてしまいそうです。
