生活必需品の供給だけでなく、それ以外のあらゆることにおいて、個人主義、個人の自発性、多様性がなければならない。自由のための戦いは、経済体制（制度）の単なる変更によって勝ち取れるものではない。それは、役人（官僚）の圧政に絶えず抵抗し、精神的自由があらゆる財の中で最も貴重なものであることを絶えず認識することによってのみ、勝ち取ることができるのである。
In everything that lies outside the provision of the necessaries of life, there must be individualism, personal initiative, variety. The fight for freedom is not to be won by any mere change in our economic system. It is to be won only by a constant resistance to the tyranny of officials, and a constant realization that mental freedom is the most precious of all goods.

"Freedom in Education; a protest against mechanism" のなかの一節です。
このエッセイ（小論）は日本の進歩的な雑誌『改造』の1923年（大正12年）２月号と Dial magazine （米国）の1923年2月号に掲載され、同年,The Prospects of Industrial Civilization の第12章（Education）に（書き足した上で）収録され、出版されています。ちょうど100年前のことです。
大正デモクラシーの時代ですが、同年秋、関東大震災が起こってしまいました。そうして、「精神性」（日本の精神）が強調されても、「"精神的自由”があらゆる財の中で最も貴重なものである」ことは日本人の多くに理解されず、昭和初期の日本の暗い時代へと移っていきました。
