アメリカのいわゆる「物質主義」や、それを中傷する人達が「浴室文明(bathroom civilization)」と呼ぶものについて、実に多くのナンセンスなことが語られている。私は、アメリカ人が他の国の人々よりも、一般に流布している意味で「物質主義者」であるとは思わない。彼らが「全能のドル」を崇拝するのは、それを手に入れることに成功しているからだと思う。しかし、貧乏な貴族やフランスの農民は、まともなアメリカ人なら誰でもショックを受けるようなことを金のためにする。金目当ての（欲得ずくの）動機で結婚するアメリカ人はほとんどいない。
A great deal of nonsense is talked about American so-called "materialism" and what its detractors call "bathroom civilization." I do not think Americans are, in any degree more "materialistic," in the popular sense of that word, than people of other nations. We think they worship the "almighty dollar" because they succeed in getting it. But a needy aristocrat or a French peasant will do things for the sake of money that shock every decent American. ＜寸言＞
ラッセルが最初にアメリカを訪問したのは1896年の秋（ラッセル24歳、結婚して１年９ヶ月後）でした。以来、何度も訪米し、一番長く滞在したのは、1938年秋から1944年６月までの約６年間でした。ラッセルは、アメリカ各地に住んだ経験があり、アメリカ及びアメリカ人についてよく知っていました。
しかし、ラッセルはアメリカをベトナム戦争などで厳しく批判したために、「反米的」というレッテルが貼られてしまいました。本日引用した文章でもわかるように、アメリカ及びアメリカ人に対する批評はあくまでも「是々非々」でした。
なお、「浴室文明(bathroom civilization)」については、別のところ（Prospects of Industrial Civilization, 1923）で次のように書いています。当時、文明の進歩の一端は浴室（の程度）に現れると米国では考えられていたようです。
「As for "bathroom civilization," it is altogether to the good unless it is thought to be all-sufficient. Every traveler owes a debt of gratitude to American tourists for the improvement in hotels that has been brought about by their grumbling.」
