＜寸言＞
オランダの哲学者のスピノザ（Baruch De Spinoza、1632年-1677年／代表作は『エチカ(倫理学)』）は、日本ではそれほど読まれていないと思われますが（ただし、現在『スピノザ全集』が刊行中で光があたっています）、後の哲学者に大きな影響を与えており、ラッセルも倫理思想の面でかなり影響を受けています。
スピノザは1673年にハイデルベルク大学の教授に招聘されますが、思索の自由を奪われることを嫌い、それを断ってレンズ磨きによって「生計をたてた」という逸話があります。しかし、実際は、貴族の友人らから提供された年金などが十分にあったため、働く必要はなかったようです。現代では、お金があっても、哲学的思索で生涯を送る人はほとんど皆無でしょうが・・・。
