手紙や回顧録には、関係者が実際に生きていたことを理解できるようにする非常に親密な詳細事が多く含まれているだけでなく、歴史家が「知っている」ようには、それらの書き手が何がこれから起ころうとしているのか知らなかったという利点がある.。歴史家は、起こったことを避けられないものとして書きがちであり、従って、あたかも同時代の人々が来たるべき出来事を予測していたに違いないと思わせるように、書きがちである。結果を推測することしかできず、しばしば間違って推測した（当時の）人々の過ちや困惑を見ると、あらゆることがよりずっといきいきとしたものになる。
Not only do they [letters and memoirs] contain much intimate detail which makes it possible to realize that the men concerned really lived, but there is the advantage that the writers did not know what was going to happen, as the historians do. Historians are apt to represent what occurred as inevitable, so that it comes to seem as if contemporaries must have foreseen coming events. Everything becomes much more vivid when one sees the mistakes and perplexities of those who could only guess at the outcome, and often guessed wrong.

これは「脚本家」の三谷幸喜への批判ではありません。
歴史家は「見てきたように嘘をつき」なんてことはありませんが、歴史解釈には多くの間違いが含まれている可能性があるので要注意です。一般人の国家に対する「嘘」は重罪になる可能性がありますが、政治家の「嘘」は政治そのものだという皮肉を言う人がけっこういます（So, if we lie to the government, it's a felony. But if they lie to us, it's politics.）。
なお、ラッセルはこのエッセイ（講演用原稿）を「歴史(書)を読む楽しみ」という視点で書いています。決して、歴史家に対する批判のエッセイではありません。念のため。
