教師の知恵を受動的に受け入れることは、ほとんどの少年少女にとって容易である。自主的に考える努力も必要なく、合理的に思われる。なぜなら、教師は生徒よりも物を知っているからである。・・・。しかし、受動的に受け入れる習慣はその後の人生において悲惨な習慣である。それは人に指導者を求めさせ、その地位に就いた者が誰であろうと指導者として受け入れるようにさせる。その習慣は、教会、政府、党員集会、その他全て、平凡な人間が国家や自分自身にとって有害な古い制度、を支持するように誤導するあらゆる組織の力を増大させるのである。br>
Passive acceptance of the teacher's wisdom is easy to most boys and girls. It involves no effort of independent thought, and seems rational because the teacher knows more than his pupils; ... Yet the habit of passive acceptance is a disastrous one in later life, It causes men to seek a leader, and to accept as a leader whoever is established in that position. It makes the power of Churches, Governments, party caucuses, and all the other organizations by which plain men are misled into supporting old systems which are harmful to the nation and to themselves.
