ある著名な人物について詳しく知るまでは、その人物が本当に見かけほど偉大であったかどうかを判断することはできない。偉人の中には、研究すればするほど偉大になる（偉大であることがわかる）人がいる。その例として、スピノザやリンカーンを挙げておこう。一方、ナポレオンは、近くで見ると、ばかげた人物になってしまう。

ラッセル自身も、おおざっぱに生涯を知るだけではどれだけ偉大だったかはよくわからないかも知れませんが、「研究すればするほど偉大であることがわかる人物」だと言えます。
それに対し、我々は幼い頃にいろいろな偉人伝を読みますが、ラッセルが言うように、そういった「偉人」も、知れば知るほど「偉人」とは思えなくなる人物もけっこういそうです。ナポレオンもその一人です。
