現代の教養ある人々にとって、事実の問題は、古代の権威を参照するのではなく、観察によって確認するのが当然と思われる。しかし、これは全く近代の発想であり、17世紀以前にはほとんど存在しなかった。アリストテレスは、女性は男性よりも歯が少ないと主張した。彼は二度結婚したが、妻の口を調べてこの言葉を検証しようとは思いもよらなかった。また、北風が吹いている時に妊娠すれば、子供はより健康になるとも言っている。... それにもかかわらず、猫と犬以外の動物を観察したことのない古典学者達は、アリストテレスの観察への忠誠を賞賛し続けるのである。
To modern educated people, it seems obvious that matters of fact are to be ascertained by observation, not by consulting ancient authorities. But this is an entirely modern conception, which hardly existed before the seventeenth century. Aristotle maintained that women have fewer teeth than men; although he was twice married, it never occurred to him to verify this statement by examining his wives' mouths. He said also that children will be healthier if conceived when the wind is in the North. ... Nevertheless, classical dons, who have never observed any animal except the cat and the dog, continue to praise Aristotle for his fidelity to observation.

現代日本のアリストテレス研究者はそんなことはないでしょうが、科学に疎い人文科学系の学者は少なくありません。また、科学に明るくても数学や論理学に疎い学者も少なくありません。
全ての分野に明るいということは無理なので、「言い過ぎないように注意しましょう（疎い事柄については強い主張をさける）」というのを座右の銘にするとよさそうです。
