自分の頭で考える人間は国家にとって扱いにくい。・・・。（そこで）プラトンの言葉で言えば、（国政を司る）賢人のみが自分の頭で考えるべきであり、一般国民は羊の群のようにただ指導者に従うべきである、と言うことになる（いわゆる、プラトンの哲人政治)。この教義は、しばしば無意識のうちに、政治的民主主義の導入後も存続し、すべての国の教育制度を根本から損なってきた。・・・。
知性を伴わないで知識（という名の情報）を与えることに最も成功している国（注：1928年当時）は、近代文明に一番最後に参加した日本である。日本の初等教育は教える見地から見ると称賛すべきものだと言われている。しかし、初等教育には他の目的が含まれている。それは、日本の近代化以前よりも強化された天皇崇拝を生徒に教えることである。
It is not desired that ordinary people should think for themselves, because it is felt that people who think for themselves are awkward to manage and cause administrative difficulties. Only the guardians, in Plato's language, are to think; the rest are to obey, or to follow leaders like a herd of sheep. This doctrine, often unconsciously, has survived the introduction of political democracy, and has radically vitiated all national systems of education.
The country which has succeeded best in giving information without intelligence is the latest addition to modern civilisation, Japan. Elementary education in Japan is said to be admirable from the point of view of instruction. But in addition to instruction it has another purpose, which is to teach worship of the Mikado - a far stronger creed now than before Japan became modernised.

＜寸言＞
これはあくまでも戦前の日本のお話しです。しかし、現在でも、日本の保守政治家のなかには戦前の日本に回帰したいと考える人達がかなり存在しています。安倍元総理（故人）を中心とする自民党清和会の人達などはそうです。日本国憲法を改正して、天皇を（単なる象徴ではなく）元首にし、戦前の家族制度に似たものを復活したいと考えています。
世界平和統一家庭連合（旧統一教会）の教義は、政治と宗教を統一し、真の父（文鮮明）と真の母（韓鶴子）の下に世界中の家庭を統一（連合）させるということなので、自民党保守が言う「家庭を大切にする」という考え方とはかなり異なっているはずですが、選挙協力を得るためなのか、安倍元総理その他の国会議員が統一教会系の団体の集会に統一教会の教祖を讃えるメッセージを頻繁に送っています。国会議員は落選したら「ただの人」になってしまいますので、「わら（カルト宗教）をもつかむ」ということでしょうか？
