愛情の中には，部分的に恐怖心に根ざしているものがある。親に対する愛情にはこの要素がある。なぜなら，親は保護を与えるからである。この種の愛情は，幼少時代においては自然なものであるが，大きくなってからは望ましいものではない。また，幼少時代であっても，他の子供に対する愛情はこの種のものではない。私の小さい娘は，兄に対して強い献身的な愛情を抱いている。彼女の世界の中で，彼女に不親切な仕うちをするのは唯一兄だけであるにもかかわらずである。対等な人間に対する愛情は愛情のうちで最上のものであり，幸福で恐怖心のないところに育つ見込みがずっと多い。恐怖心は，意識的であれ，無意識的であれ，憎しみを生みやすい。

成長するにつれ、自分に自信がもてるようになるに従い、恐怖心を持たなく（あるいは持つことが少なく）なっていきます。
しかし、戦争や大地震などの大惨事が身近なところで起これば、多くの人に恐怖心が生まれてきてしまいます。恐怖心はできるだけなくなったほうがよいですが、突発的な大災害が起きたり、「いずれ死ぬにしても苦しみながら死にたくない」という気持ちがある限り、恐怖心はなくなりそうにありません。
