他人を理解することは容易でない。また,人間理解の困難さを理解しない人間によっては決してそれは達成されない。しかし歴史研究や友情や愛情において最も価値のあるものは,自分とは異なる他の人格（個性）の理解へと徐々に接近することである。このことは,他人をカテゴリー別に分類する作業によっても,また多くの人が信じている直観力によっても,達成は不可能である。両者の結合は必須であり,単独では不十分である。何よりも必要なのは,根拠のない侮蔑から発する確信過剰（cocksureness）を放棄することである。
To understand another human being is not easy and is never achieved by those who do not know that it is difficult. But what is of most value in the study of history, in friendship, and in love is the gradual and tentative approximation to the understanding of personalities unlike one's own. This is not to be achieved by putting people in categories, nor yet by the faculty of intuition in which many people put their trust. A combination of the two is necessary but is not alone sufficient. What is most necessary of all is to avoid the cocksureness that springs from an unfounded contempt.
