疲労がたまると、幸福には休息だけが必要であるかのような錯覚を生み出す。しかし、しばらく休息をとり元気を取り戻すと、また新たな活動へと駆り立てられる。それゆえ、幸福な人生とは活動的な人生でなければならない。そうして、もしそれが有益な人生でもあるべきとしたら、その活動は可能な限り創造的なものであるべきであり、ただ単に略奪的であったり防御的であったりしてはならない。しかし、創造的な活動には想像力と独創性が必要であり、それは現状打破の傾向がある。権力を現在保有する人々は、自分達の不当な特権が奪われるのではないかということで、現状を乱すことを恐れる。
Fatigue produces the illusion that only rest is needed for happiness; but when men have rested for a time boredom drives them to renewed activity. For this reason, a happy life must be one in which there is activity. If it is also to be a useful life, the activity ought to be as far as possible creative, not merely predatory or defensive. But creative activity requires imagination and originality, which are apt to be subversive of the status quo.
