　デカルトの「精神(心)」を形作ったものはこの「思考の」系列であったが、彼の精神（心）はもはや単独の実体ではないことは，ニューヨークの全住民はニューヨークの数人の住人を越えた単独の実体でないのと同様である。（そこで）「デカルトは考える」という代わりに，我々は,「デカルトはその各要素が思考（現象）であるところの思考の系列である」というべきである、そうして「それゆえにデカルトは存在する」という代りに，「デカルトはこの系列の名前であるので、デカルトは一つの名前である」と言わなければならない。（注：つまり、「デカルト」という「不変の実体」は存在しない。）

It was this series of "thoughts" which constituted Descartes' "mind," but his mind was no more a separate entity than the population of New York is a separate entity over and above the several inhabitants. Instead of saying "Descartes thinks," we ought to say "Descartes is a series of which the members are thoughts." And instead of "therefore Descartes exists," we ought to say "Since 'Descartes' is the name of this series, it follows that 'Descartes' is a name.
