The summer of 1940 offered for me an extraordinary contrast between public horror and private delight. We spent the summer in the Sierras, at Fallen Leaf Lake near Lake Tahoe, one of the loveliest places that it has ever been my good fortune to know. ... We had a log cabin in the middle of pine trees, close to the lake. ... I had a tiny study which was hardly more than a shed, and there I finished my Inquiry into Meaning and Truth. Often it was so hot that I did my writing stark naked.
