猫は鼠に同情心（思いやり）を持たない。ローマ人は象以外の動物に対してはまったく同情心を抱かなかった。ナチスはユダヤ人に対しては同情心をまったく持たなかった。スターリンは富農に対してまったく同情心を抱かなかった。同情心（思いやり）に限界がある場合には，善の概念にもそれに対応した限界が存在している。・・・こうしたことの全ては、猫と鼠の倫理学である。（注：支配する者は支配されるものに同情心を持たない。）
The cat has no sympathy for the mouse; the Romans had no sympathy for any animals except elephants; the Nazis have none for Jews, and Stalin had none for kulaks. Where there is limitation of sympathy there is a corresponding limitation in the conception of the good... All these are cat-and-mouse ethics.
