もしも我々が皆完全に幸福であるならもっと幸福になろうと努力することはないだろうということを、私は否定しない。しかしもしかするとよい成果を生むかもしれないということで他人に苦痛を与えることが人間の義務の一部であるなどということは認めることはできない。苦痛は九分九厘人を押しつぶすのみである。・・・死があるかぎり，悲しみがあるだろうし，悲しみがあるかぎりその量を増やすことが人間の義務の一部になるはずはない。たとえ，少数の稀な人間が，悲しみを高度のものに変える方法を知っている，という事実があるにしてもである。
I do not deny that if we were all perfectly happy we should not exert ourselves to become happier. But I cannot admit that it is any part of the duty of human beings to provide others with pain on the off-chance that it may prove fruitful. In ninety-nine cases out of a hundred pain proves merely crushing. ... So long as there is death there will be sorrow, and so long as there is sorrow it can be no part of the duty of human beings to increase its amount, in spite of the fact that a few rare spirits know how to transmute it.

＜寸言＞
一般的に言って、自分や生活に満足したら人間はあまり努力しなくなる。しかしだからと言って、競争に敗けるちみじめな結果になるよと説き（宣伝や教育をして）、わざと不必要な競争をさせ、多くの人を不幸にすることによって一部の者（資本家であったり、為政者であったり）が利益を受けるようなやり方はよくない。
