私が形而上学に興味をもっているということを祖母が発見した時,彼女は,形而上学の問題の全ては次のように要約できる,と私に言った −「心（精神）とは何か---たいした問題ではない（物の数に入らない）。物質とは何か,---気にしてはいけない」（松下注：ここは言うまでもなく,'心'（精神）と'物'（質）を対比させており,しかも,'What is mind?' に対しては 'no matter',What is matter?' に対しては 'never mind' と凝った言い方をしている。）
この言葉を15,16回くりかえしているうち,面白くなくなった。しかし形而上学に対する祖母の敵意は,その生涯を終えるまで続いた。
When she discovered that I was interested in metaphysics, she told me that the whole subject could be summed up in the saying: 'What is mind? no matter; what is matter? never mind.' At the fifteenth or sixteenth repetition of this remark, it ceased to amuse me, but my grandmother's animus against metaphysics continued to the end of her life.

人間（動物）は外界からの刺激を感覚器官が受けて外界を理解するしかないが、その感覚器官でとらえたものを「実像」と断定してしまうと、日常生活には困らないにしても、大きな勘違いが生じる。
