 悪いものはみな互いに関連しており、いずれの悪しきものも、他の悪しきものの原因になりやすい。特に疲労は非常にしばしば'ねたみ'の原因になる。・・・それゆえ、ねたみを減らす方法の1つは疲れを減らすことである。しかしはるかに重要なことは本能を満足させる生活を確保することである。

 「下手「の」考え休むに似たり」(囲碁や将棋で、下手な者がいくら長時間考え込んでも名案など浮かばず、まるで駒を手にしたまま何も考えずに休んでいるようなものだということから、よい考えなど浮かぶはずもないのに、あれこれ考えて時間を無駄にするという意味/下手「な」考え休むに似たり、というのは誤り)。
