本章において、私は，あたかも最初に決定論に反対し次に自由意志に反対するという首尾一貫性のなさに責任があるように思われるかも知れない。しかし，実際は，両者とも科学的に確かめることができる範囲を超えた全くの形而上学的な理論である。因果律を探求することは −すでに見たように− 科学の本質であり，従って，純粋に実際的な意味において，科学者は常に決定論を作業仮説として仮定しなければならない（のである）。
It may seem as though, in the present chapter, I had been guilty of an inconsistency in arguing first against determinism and then against free will. But in fact both are absolute metaphysical doctrines, which go beyond what is scientifically ascertainable. The search for causal laws, as we saw, is the essence of science, and therefore, in a purely practical sense, the man of science must always assume determinism as a working hypothesis.
