他人に対する差別はかわいそうだとか、差別はすべききではないと思いながらも、明確に意思表示をするは少ない。しかし、差別されるのが自分の場合は憤激にたえない。
ロラン夫人も子爵の妻なのでいちおう貴族であるが、差別されて初めて「覚醒（かくせい」したと思われる。
