祖母はワイン（酒）を嫌い,タバコを毛嫌いし,常に菜食主義者になるかならないかの瀬戸際にいた。祖母の生活は禁欲的なものであった。粗食で,８時に朝食をとり,80歳の年齢に達するまで,アフター・ティー（注：就寝前の午後10時頃のお茶の時間）まで,けっして安楽椅子に坐ることはなかった。祖母はまったく超俗的であり,何かしら世俗的な名誉を考える人たちを軽蔑した。
She (Russell's grandmother) disliked wine, abhorred tobacco, and was always on the verge of becoming a vegetarian. Her life was austere. She ate only the plainest food, breakfasted at eight, and until she reached the age of eighty, never sat in a comfortable chair until after tea. She was completely unworldly, and despised those who thought anything of worldly honours.

英国や日本の政治家の妻には、昔はこういった人もめずらしくなかってであろうが、現在では、安倍昭恵総理夫妻に象徴されるように、世俗的な名誉や経済的利益を求める人が多い。
