もし，我々が肉体の死後に（自分という）人格が生き残ることを信じようとするなら，我々は記憶の継続性（注：死後も生前と同じ記憶を保有していること）あるいは少なくとも習慣の継続性を想定しなければならない。なぜなら，もしそうでないとしたら，同一人物が継続して存在すると想定する理由がまったくないからである。・・・さて，習慣と記憶を生じさせる肉体への影響は死と腐敗によって消失する。また −ほとんど奇跡であるが− それらの肉体への影響が,我々があの世でその中に住むと想定される新しい肉体にどのようにして移されるかを理解することは困難である。もし，我々が肉体から遊離した霊であるとすると困難は増すのみである
If we are to believe in the survival of a personality after the death of the body, we must suppose that there is continuity of memories or at least of habits, since otherwise there is no reason to suppose that the same person is continuing. .. Now the effects on the body, which give rise to habits and memories, are obliterated by death and decay, and it is difficult to see how, short of miracle, they can be transferred to a new body such as we may be supposed to inhabit in the next life. If we are to be disembodied spirits, the difficulty is only increased.

死後、自分の「たましい」が生き残ると思っている人がいるが、それはどういう意味でなのか相手が理解できるように説明できる人はあまりいない。生きている時の記憶をまったくもっていない（つまり自分とは思われない）「自分」が他人あるいは他の動物の肉体のなかに復活するというのか、それとも・・・？
