しかし，もしかするとよい成果を生むかもしれないということで（on the off-chance that），他人に苦痛を与えることが人間の義務の一部であるなどということは，認めることはできない。苦痛は，九分九厘，人を押しつぶすのみである。あとの一厘は，肉体が受け継ぐ自然の衝撃にまかせる（trust to 委ねる）ほうがよい。死があるかぎり，悲しみがあるだろうし，悲しみがあるかぎり，その量を増やすことが人間の義務の一部になるはずはない。たとえ，少数の稀な人間が，悲しみを高度のものに変える方法を知っている，という事実があるにしてもである。
But I cannot admit that it is any part of the duty of human beings to provide others with pain on the off-chance that it may prove fruitful. In ninety-nine cases out of a hundred pain proves merely crushing. In the hundredth case it is better to trust to the natural shocks that flesh is heir to. So long as there is death there will be sorrow, and so long as there is sorrow it can be no part of the duty of human beings to increase its amount, in spite of the fact that a few rare spirits know how to transmute it.
