女性は，男性に従属（隷属）しているかぎり，あえて自分自身の情緒を正直に語ろうとはせず，男性を喜ばせるような情緒を（偽って）表明していた。それゆえ，子供に対する女性の普通の態度だとこれまで思われてきたものに基づいて議論することはできない。というのは，女性が完全に解放されるにつれて，女性の情緒は，一般に，これまで考えられてきたものとはまったく異なるものであることを発見するかもしれないからである。
So long as women were in subjection, they did not dare to be honest about their own emotions, but professed those which were pleasing to the male. We cannot, therefore, argue from what has been hitherto supposed to be woman's normal attitude towards children, for we may find that as women become fully emancipated their emotions turn out to be, in general, quite different from what has hitherto been thought.

いろいろな領域において男性が女性に対して優位にたっている限り、男性に対する女性の「忖度」は残り続ける。男性だって権力者に対して「忖度」するんだから、自分に対して他の人（特に女性など）も「忖度」してほしいと感じる男性も少なくない。ただし、その「忖度」は男性は「思いやり」と呼称している。
