昔は，夫は時々不倫（不貞）を働いたが，通例，妻のほうはそれを知らなかった。もし妻が（夫の不貞を）知ると，夫は罪を犯したことを告白し，自分が後悔していると妻に信じさせた。他方，妻の方は，通例，貞淑（道徳的）であった。もしも，妻が不倫（不貞）をして，その事実を夫が知れば，結婚は解消された。
In old days the husband was occasionally unfaithful, but as a rule his wife did not know of it. If she did, he confessed that he had sinned and made her believe that he was penitent. She, on the other hand, was usually virtuous. If she was not, and the fact came to her husband's knowledge, the marriage broke up.

現代日本では，どちらが不貞を働いても、離婚する場合がほとんど。不貞を働いた宮崎議員（議員辞職に追い込まれ家庭で子育てに専念）とその妻の金子議員のような例はめずらしい。
