恋愛(Love)は，この言葉を適切に（正しく）使用した場合は，男女間の任意の，あるいはすべての関係（注：いわゆる「愛情」）を指すのではなく，少なからぬ情緒を含み，肉体的であると同時に心理的でもある関係のみを意味する。恋愛は，いかなる程度の激しさにも高まる可能性がある。・・・この情緒は，ある社会では，他の社会よりもずっと普通である（一般的な現象である）。これは，当の国民（民衆）の性格によるのではなく，その慣習と制度によっている，と私は考える。
Love, when the word is properly used, does not denote any and every relation between the sexes, but only one involving considerable emotion, and a relation which is psychological as well as physical.
