　パラオ諸島の人々は，永遠の至福を得るためには鼻に穴をあけることが必要だと信じている(注：ウェスターマーク前掲書,p.170)。ヨーロッパ人は，ある言葉を唱えながら頭をぬらすと，この目的（永遠の至福の獲得）がいっそううまくかなえられると考えている。（我々英国人/西洋人にとって）パラオ諸島の人々の信念は迷信であるが。（そうして）ヨーロッパ人の信念は，神聖な宗教（キリスト教）の真理である（注：もちろん皮肉です）。

The Pelew Islanders believe that the perforation of the nose is necessary for winning eternal bliss. (note: Westermarck, op. cit., p. 170). Europeans think that this end is better attained by wetting the head while pronouncing certain words. The belief of the Pelew Islanders is a superstition ; the belief of the Europeans is one of the truths of our holy religion.
