マリノフスキーのトロブリアンド諸島民に関する著書は，父性の心理に大きく光(照明)を投げかけた。特に，次の３冊の書物－『未開社会における性と抑圧』，『原始的な心理における父(親)』，『北西部メラネシアにおける未開人の性生活』は，ここで父性感情と呼んでいる複雑な感情を理解するための必読書である。事実，男性が子供に興味・関心を寄せるようになるには，まったく異なる二つの理由がある。即ち，男性は，自分の子供であると信じるがゆえに子供に興味・関心を寄せる場合もあるだろうし，妻の子供だと知っているがゆえに子供に興味・関心を寄せる場合もあるだろう。生殖における父親の役割が知られていない場合は，このうち，第二の動機のみが働く(のである)。
A flood of light has been thrown upon the psychology of paternity by Malinowski's books on the Trobriand Islanders. Three books especially - Sex and Repression in Savage Society, The Father in Primitive Psychology, and The Sexual Life of Savages in North-West Melanesia- are quite indispensable to any understanding of the complex sentiment which we call that of paternity. There are, in fact, two entirely distinct reasons which may lead a man to be interested in a child: he may be interested in the child because he believes it to be his child, or again he may be interested in it because he knows it to be his wife's child. The second of these motives alone operates where the part of the father in generation is not known.

愛情をどこまで発展させることができるか，また実際に発展・拡大させているかによってその人の人間性の一面がわかる。 子供に対する愛、孫に対する愛、正妻の子供に対する愛、愛人の子供に対する愛、親に対する愛、兄弟に対する愛、祖父母に対する愛、親しい友人に対する愛、同じ民族に対する愛、同じ人種に対する愛、人類に対する愛、いきとし生けるもの全てに対する愛、・・・。 具体的・即物的なもの（愛）からしだいに抽象的なもの(愛)になっていく。他の生物無生物（土、太陽、国家）に対しても「愛を語る」ことはあるが、それはだいぶニュアンスが異なる。
