しかし，ショーは自分のお気に入りの逸話を，いくらか頻度が多目であるが，繰り返し話したい気持をおさえることができなかった。絨毯地製の旅行かばん（carpetbag）に頭（首）を突込んでからかばんを閉じて自殺した叔父さん（の話）に到ると，ショー夫人の顔に何ともいえぬ退屈な様子がいつも現れ，もし誰かが彼女の隣の席に坐っていれば，その人はショーのいうことをよく聴いていないように気を使わなければならなかった。
But he (= Bernard Shaw) could not resist a somewhat frequent repetition of his favorite anecdotes. Whenever he came to his uncle who committed suicide by putting his head in a carpetbag and then shutting it, a look of unutterable boredom used to appear on Mrs. Shaw's face, and if one were sitting next her one had to take care not to listen to Shaw.
