理想主義として通っているものの多くは，偽装された憎悪か，あるいは偽装された権力欲（権力欲の偽装）です。人間の大集団が一見気高い（高邁な）動機によってゆり動かされるのを見る時，その動機の下にあるものを見て，そういった動機をこのように効果的なものにしているのは何んだろうと自問したほうがよいでしょう。私が試みてきたような心理学的探究が実行に値するのは，一部分は，見かけだおしの気高さ（高邁さ）に騙されることがきわめて容易だからです。結論として私が言いたいのは，もし私の言ったことが正しければ，世界を幸福にするために必要とされる主要なものは知性であるということです。そして，これは，結局，楽観主義的な結論です，なぜなら，知性は既知の教育方法で育成できるものだからです。
Much that passes as idealism is disguised hatred or disguised love of power. When you see large masses of men swayed by what appear to be noble motives, it is as well to look below the surface and ask yourself what it is that makes these motives effective. It is partly because it is so easy to be taken in by a facade of nobility that a psychological inquiry, such as I have been attempting, is worth making. I would say, in conclusion, that if what I have said is right, the main thing needed to make the world happy is intelligence. And this, after all, is an optimistic conclusion, because intelligence is a thing that can be fostered by known methods of education.
