Bertrand Russell Quotes 366 |
As for me, I was sent in a huge convoy which proceeded majestically at the speed of a bicycle, escorted by corvettes and aeroplanes. I was taking with me the manuscript of my History of Western Philosophy, and the unfortunate censors had to read every word of it lest it should contain information useful to the enemy.

* a brief comment
Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy is a publication of additions to a talk he gave at a public lecture for the general public. It should therefore be easy reading for anyone with even a passing interest in philosophy. However, many censors and others were not interested in philosophy, which could have been painful. Besides, the censors would have had some pride in asking, ‘What does this mean?’ Unlike censorship of general books, I imagine it was an uncomfortable job.
