The third theory, according to which each man should cocern himself exclusively with his own group, has a certain measure of practical wisdom. I can probably do more for my own family than for some family in Central Africa, and therefore Mrs. Jellaby was misguided. But as the world grows more interconnected the scope of such considerations becomes more and more limited. When the world’s food supply is inadequate, if I am part of the public that refuses to consider the needs of other countries I am helping to bring a slow and painful death to millions. The doctrine is not logically respectable except in the extreme form of egoism, and in this form, as we saw at the beginning of this chapter, it is not true to human nature. I conclude that, so far, we have found no definable partial good which it is rational to substitute for the general good as the right end of action. But this raises the question of moral obligation, which will be considered in the following chapter. |
