As champion of the wage-earners, Marx retorted with his slogan: "Proletarians of all countries, unite.” There are those who go further still in limiting loyalty. Confucius very nearly confined it to the family; some theorists and multitudes of practical men have confined it to the Self, and have embodied their philosophy in the proverb “charity begins at home”. Each of these doctrines expresses something of the prevalent desires of large groups of men, and could not otherwise have achieved wide-spread popularity. I wish to consider whether there is anything of a theoretical kind to be said in favour of any one of them as against any other. |
