これはラッセルの基本的な考え方です。人間の欲求には、私有できるが共有できないものと、共有できるものがあり、可能な限り、私有（所有）衝動を抑制し、共有可能な衝動を助長する生き方が望ましい、というものです。よく引用されるラッセルの名言は次の部分です。
「最良の生活（人生）とは、創造的衝動が最大限に発揮され、所有衝動が最小限に現れる生活（人生）である。」（The best life is the one in which the creative impulses play the largest part and the possessive impulses the smallest. ）
