＜寸言＞
現代は常に刺激に満ちており、現代人は何か興味深いことがないかと、常に刺激を求めています。特に若い世代は、刺激を求め続けることが幸せだと考える傾向が強いようです。
しかし、そうした生活には、いろいろな知識や経験を得るという肯定的な面がある一方で、他人が持っているものが自分よりも遥かに良いと思い込むことによって、しばしば不幸な気持ちになりがちだという否定的な面もあります。
若い人の多くは「退屈を恐れ」、一日中スマホの画面を眺めたり、ワイヤレス・イヤホンで一日中音楽を聴いたりしていることがよくあります。若い人は、そうした生活によって自分の大切な時間を浪費していることに気付いていないことが多いようです。歳をとって初めて、「残された時間が少ない！ 時間を大切に使おう！」と気づくようになるしかないのでしょうか？
ラッセルの『幸福論』に載っている以下の言葉をよく考え、若い頃から時々自分の人生を振り返ることが大切だと思います。

Modern life is constantly filled with stimuli, and modern people are always seeking something interesting. Especially for the younger generation, there seems to be a strong tendency to believe that continuous stimulation is the key to happiness.
However, while such a lifestyle has the positive aspect of gaining various knowledge and experiences, there is also the negative side, where one often feels unhappy by believing that what others have is far better than what they themselves possess.
Many young people "fear boredom," spending entire days staring at their smartphone screens or listening to music through wireless earphones. They often do not realize that they are wasting their precious time through such activities. Is it only as they grow older that they come to realize, "There is less time left! I must make better use of my time!"?
I believe it is important to reflect on one's life from a young age, taking the following words from Bertrand Russell's The Conquest of Happiness into careful consideration:
"In flying from the fructifying kind of boredom, they fall a prey to the other far worse kind. A happy life must be to a great extent a quiet life, for it is only in an atmosphere of quiet that true joy can live." (The Conquest of Happiness)
