つらい現実に直面し続ければ、精神の均衡を失ってしまいます。そこで私たちは、想像や空想の世界に一時的に身を置くことで、心の安定を保とうとします。これは人間に備わった自然な防衛機能であり、ラッセルもその点を「健全な想像力の働き」として肯定しています。
しかし、中には現実を多面的に見ることができず、自分の感情や信念に圧倒されて、極端な言動に走る人も少なくありません。たとえば、国家という概念を冷静に見つめることができず、国家主義的な情熱にとらわれたり、それを他人に押し付けようとする人たちがいます。
民主主義社会では、暴力を伴わない限り、そうした極端な意見も表現の自由の範囲内として認めざるをえません。しかし一方で、マスコミの中には、センセーショナルな主張の方が視聴率を稼げるとして、事実確認を怠り、結果的に虚偽や偏見の拡散を助長しているものもあります。そのような情報環境こそ、私たちが警戒すべき対象です。
If one continues to face harsh realities without respite, one's mental balance is bound to collapse. That is why we occasionally take refuge in the world of imagination or fantasy to restore our inner stability. This is a natural defense mechanism inherent in human beings, and Russell regarded it as a "healthy function of imagination."
However, there are people who fail to see reality from multiple perspectives and are overwhelmed by their own emotions or convictions, leading them to behave in extreme ways. For example, some are unable to view the idea of the nation with calm objectivity and instead become possessed by nationalist fervor, even attempting to impose such beliefs upon others.
In a democratic society, we must recognize that even such extreme opinions fall within the bounds of freedom of expression, so long as they do not involve violence. Yet at the same time, some segments of the media, driven by the desire for higher ratings, neglect fact-checking and thereby contribute -- perhaps unwittingly -- to the spread of falsehoods and prejudice. It is precisely such an information environment that we must remain vigilant against.
