私たちはそれぞれ固有の道徳観や労働観を持っています。しかし、そういった道徳観や労働観を他人には適用する一方で、自分には適用しないなど、不徹底な面があります。勤勉や労働は善だという考え方を多くの人が持っている一方で、自分はできるだけ楽をしたいと思ってしまいます。「他人には厳しく、自分には甘い」という諺がその事実を表現しています。
私たちは、できるだけ自分の好きなことをして一生を送りたいという願望を抱いており、古今東西、多くの思想家がユートピアを夢見てきました。しかし、現実の世界は、豊かな国々と貧しい国々との間に深い分断があり、また、豊かな国の中でも富裕層と貧困層との間には大きな格差が存在しています。
人類全体が豊かに暮らせる世界は、AIやロボット技術の活用によって実現する可能性が高いと考えられますが、そういった時代が来るまでには多くの紆余曲折が予想されます。
ラッセルが90年以上前（1932年）に述べた次の言葉には、時代がどれほど変わったとしても、いまだに残る「労働観」が反映されています。この点について、ラッセルの指摘は現在でも非常に重要ではないでしょうか？
We each have our own unique moral and work ethics. However, there is often an inconsistency in applying these ethical views: we apply them to others but not to ourselves. Many people hold the belief that diligence and labor are virtues, yet they themselves desire to take it easy whenever possible. The proverb "strict with others, lenient with oneself" reflects this fact.
We all harbor a desire to spend our lives doing what we enjoy as much as possible, and throughout history, many philosophers across cultures have dreamed of a utopia. However, the real world is marked by a deep divide between wealthy and poor nations, and even within wealthy nations, there exists a significant gap between the rich and the poor.
A world where all of humanity can live in prosperity is highly likely to become possible through the use of AI and robotics. However, it is expected that there will be many twists and turns before such an era arrives.
The following words from Bertrand Russell, spoken more than 90 years ago (1932), reflect an attitude towards labor that, no matter how much the world has changed, still persists today. Isn't Russell’s observation still highly relevant today?
