正気と狂気の関係
いかなる隔離された情熱も,隔離された状態のままでは,(一種の)狂気である。正気とは,種々の狂気を総合(統合)したものとして定義してよいだろう。いかなる支配的な情熱も,(その情熱の対象を)達成できないという,支配的な恐怖を引き起こす。いかなる支配的な恐怖も,時には明白かつ意識的な狂信の形で,時には人を無力にさせる臆病のために,時には夢の中にのみ現れる無意識あるいは意識下の恐怖のために,悪夢を引き起こす。危険な世界において正気を保持したいと思う者は,自分の心のなかで恐怖の議会を招集し,そこにおいて,個々の恐怖を順にとりあげ,他の全ての恐怖によって,不合理であるとして票決されるべきである。Every isolated passion is, in isolation, insane; sanity may be defined as a synthesis of insanities. Every dominant passion generates a dominant fear, the fear of its non-fulfilment.
