哲学者の責務(1)
私はもはや、知性は感覚よりすぐれているとも、プラトンのイデヤの世界のみが「真実の」世界を知らしめるとも、感じない。以前は、感覚や感覚の上に築かれた思想をひとつの牢獄と考え、感覚から解放された思考によってのみ,我々はそこから脱出しうる、と常に考えていた。今ではそうは感じない。感覚と、感覚の上に築かれた思想とを、牢獄の格子としてではなく、窓として考える。我々は、いかに不完全であったとしても、ライプニッツの単子のように世界を映しうる、と私は考える。そして、物を歪めない鏡となることにできるかぎり努めることが哲学者の責務である、と考える。しかしまた、我々の本性そのもののゆえに避けがたい歪みをはっきり認めることも、また哲学者の責務である。（ 出典： ラッセル『私の哲学の発展』）I have no longer the feeling that intellect is superior to sense, and that only Plato's world of ideas gives access to the 'real' world. I used to think of sense, and of thought which is built on sense, as a prison from which we can be freed by thought which is emancipated from sense. I now have no such feelings. I think of sense, and of thoughts built on sense, as windows, not as prison bars. I think that we can, however imperfectly, mirror the world, like Leibniz's monads; and I think it is the duty of the philosopher to make himself as undistorting a mirror as he can.
