　３月９日付のお手紙ありがとうございます。私を無神論者と呼ぶべきかあるいは不可知論者（agnositic）と呼ぶべきかについて,あなたとルイス氏が迷っているのは，何の不思議もありません。私自身が迷っており，時折自分のことを無神論者と言ったり,時折不可知論者と言ったりしているからです。
　物的対象の実在を疑ったり,世界は５分前に出現したかもしれないと考えたりするレベルでの哲学的厳密さにおいては,私は自分を不可知論者と呼ぶべきであると思います。しかし,実際上は（ for all practical purposes）,私は無神論者です。私は,オリンポス山(注：ギリシアの神々が住んでいたという山）の神々や,ヴァルハラ（注：北欧神話のオーディン神の宮殿で，戦場で生きる者と死ぬ者を選別するヴァルキュリャによって選別された戦士の魂（霊）が招かれてもてなしを受ける場所）の神々が実在するなどとはとてもありそうもないと思っているのと同じようにキリスト教の神も実在しているとは考えていません。もう一つ例をあげます。地球と火星の間に，楕円形の軌道にのって回転している中国製の陶器の茶瓶（ティーポット）がないとは誰も証明することができませんが,しかし，そうだからといって,そういうものが実際に十分に考慮に入れられる可能性が十分にあるとは誰も考えません。私は,キリスト教の神も,ちょうどこれと同じように実在しそうもないと考えます。

Dear Mr Major.

Thank you for your letter of March 9. I do not wonder that you and Mr. Lewis are in doubt as to whether to call me an atheist or an agnostic as I am myself in doubt upon this point and call myself sometimes the one and sometimes the other. I think that in philosophical strictness at the level where one doubts the existence of material objects and holds that the world may have existed for only five minutes, I ought to call myself an agnostic; but, for all practical purposes, I am an atheist. I do not think the existence of the Christian God any more probable that the existence of the Gods of Olympus or Valhalla. To take another illustration : nobody can prove that there is not between the Earth and Mars a china teapot revolving in an elliptic orbit, but nobody thinks this sufficiently likely to be taken into account in practice. I think the Christian God just as unlikely.
