【"foreign"：自分から見て,「他国の」「他国産の」あるいは「異質の」ものを意味する（中立的な）形容詞。ただし、名詞の"foreigner"は英語では蔑称に近い感情的な含みを持つので要注意（日本人は「外国人」という言葉をよく使うが、それを「foreigner と訳して頻繁に使うといやな感じを持つ「外国人」もいるであろう」）。】
【"alien"：単に「他国の」「異質の」といった意味ではなく、積極的な否定的感情を内に持つ形容詞。ただし名詞(自国の市民権を持ちながら他国に住んでいる人のこと)として使った場合は否定的な感情は含まれなくなるので要注意。】

(1-1) Foreign travel is getting popular among young office workers.
[若い会社員の間に外国旅行がはやり出している。]

(1-2) His disease was caused by a foreign matter that had gotten into his vein.
[彼の病気は血管の中に異物が入ったことに起因していた。]

(2) It is a way to thinking alien to me.
[そういう考え方とは自分はまったく性が合わない（違和感を覚える）。]
