★ mind 知性 (pp.150-151)
　この言葉は感覚や感情といったものとは対象的な言葉で、「知性」とか「脳」のこと。単に「心」（や「精神」）と解しても誤解されやすい（場合が少なくない）。たとえば、典型的な間違いに、"At Harvard, I met some good minds." というのを、「私はハーバード大学で善意の人々に会った」というのは誤訳であり、正しくは「私はハーバード大学で優れた頭脳の持ち主に何人か会えた」である。

* He had a fine mind, and it just had to be directed properly, she thought.（これも、彼は「立派な精神の持ち主」ではなく、「優れた知能の持ち主（知性）」。つまり、「知能」は「道徳性」と対象的に用いられており、「彼はなかなか頭のよい青年だから、よい方向に導いてやらなければならない」という意味。）

　Ｒ英単語・熟語集の用例とはできるだけ重複しないようにしますが、用例が少ない場合はどうしても重複してしまいます。あしからず。
